Macbook Air keys wearing way

This has been brought up in older posts, and the suggestion was to start a new discussion. It seems that this has been a known issue on numerous Macbooks, dismissed by Apple as "normal wear and tear", but IMHO really a matter of a poor Apple design decision in its choice of materials. In my case it is a 2015 MB Air, as per the attached pic.

As the cost of an offiial Apple repair is completely out of the question, has anyone any experience with thirs-party replacements? There are literally dozens of supposed options on Amazon. most of which are likely questionable so any advice from those who have run the replacement gauntlet would be appreciated.

Perhaps to try your luck & read up on replacement official Apple keyboard keys

then order those your tired MacBook Air needs replaced? Bookmarked ones

are still in business; these seem to offer most other brand replacements too.

https://www.laptopkeyreplacements.com/APPLE/

https://www.laptopkeyreplacements.com/macbook-air/

Different set of links, turned into the same company; maybe they merged.

Details are everything in seeking replacement key top, key button parts.

There are at least two type parts listed for each & several part numbers.

Be sure to identify MacBook Air 13" build model year correctly

maybe everymac.com and mactracker.ca app may among a

few choice references, to find sub-model specs & drill down?

Apple Macbook Air Keyboard Key 13" Mid 2012-2016 - LaptopKeyReplacements.com

These are DIY parts, or with the correct parts ordered (triple-check first)

..almost anyone with fair eyesight and dexterity might make a go of this.

You can definitely replace the individual key caps. However, Apple uses keyboards from two different manufacturers which means they use completely different scissor mechanisms & key caps. It is very hard to tell them apart. One has a circular opening in the scissor mechanism, while the other type has a small rectangular notch on one part of the circular area...this is what I usually use to identify them, but I have no idea how a vendor will identify the two types. The two types are not interchangeable, so you must get the key cap (perhaps even scissor mechanism) that matches your laptop's keyboard.

Some keys just wear. The key caps Apple uses are just clear or translucent white plastic covered in black paint. It is the black paint that wears off. I've seen this happen for years with some of the keyboards. Nothing new here.

Edit: The spacebar will be difficult to detach & reattach since it has two scissor mechanisms along with two stabilizer bars along the top & bottom of the key. All the longer keys have at least one stabilizer bar.

..Baroque_Hillbilly..

Well, all I can say is read through the company's pages, as

these are about the only show in town; all details are here:

And most questions are answered with images, diagrams, even

with install videos. More answers than most persons can give

you without them working for the replacement keys company.

If once you'd taken keys off the Mac, if yours aren't a match

contact the company; and they have good information to get

the other option(s) out to you. Not a big deal.

Even Mac tech folks can't say all that's going on, without being in

this business. Not trying to hard sell; the company is in California.

Since you need to fix a computer, this remains a best idea to try.

None of my Macs are new models, not even my iPhone or iPad mini.

Sadly, the ability to have current supported web browsers is critical.

Most my Macs top out at Catalina 10.15.7; & can't use a third-party

path to skip ahead to newer macOS. Preference is Mojave 10.14.6.

Darn... subject should read "...keys wearing away."

@K Shaffer,

I'll check out those links, thanks, as well as carefully checking the model # of mine. I can summon the necessary dexterity and patience to replace the keys if I can get the right ones. I replaced the battery in this MBA a year or so ago as well as replacing the old HD in my 2009 (!!!) iMac with a 500 G SSD a few years ago.

Despite being 9 years old, it still functions perfectly for my purposes . (and it has - gasp - PORTS!) so I see no need to replace it. I recently went through a problem (detailed on this Forum) with a newer (2019) MBA that overheated when running Skype, and which is being sold back as being "unfit for purpose." :)
