Sounds like you have a fault keyboard.

1) Test a different keyboard connected to your iMac.

2) Test your keyboard connected to a different Mac or PC.

FWIW most any USB Logitech, PC or other Generic keyboard will work with your iMac.

Thanks for the reply. You're right. I've used this iMac for 12 years, but I bought several keyboards and mouses replacing the old ones twice already. I try another spare Mac wireless keyboards without the numeric keys and it work fine. I think it's the hardware issues.

Now, I'm contemplating on purchasing a new Mac, between the new iMac with M4 chip, but smaller screen and otherwise upgrade to Mac studio or Mac pro both of which are very expensive. Oddly, though, Mac studio and Mac pro with same specs seem to cost about the same price!!

All of the Macs based on Ultra chips – high-end Mac Studios, Mac Pro minitowers, and rack-mount Mac Pros – are very expensive. Most people in the market for a desktop Mac would be better served by one with a plain, Pro, or Max chip (i.e., iMac, Mac mini, or low-end Mac Studio).

As for the prices of Mac Studios vs. those of Mac Pros:

  • Mac Studio – 28/60/32-core M3 Ultra, 96 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD – $3999 USD.
  • Mac Pro – 24/60/32-core M2 Ultra, 64 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD - $6999 USD.

The Mac Studio has a newer-generation processor and more RAM, but costs $3000 USD less. You pay a LOT for the expansion slots on the Mac Pro, especially considering that they don't support graphics cards!
