Sequoia 15.5 crashing “due to a problem” when the screen sleeps too long

Immediately after upgrading to Sequoia 15.5, my 2024 MacBook Air M3 has been crashing multiple times everyday when it starts sleeping. I don't just leave my laptop on everyday, but when I am studying and take a break for 10 minutes it will sleep and then crash, giving me the message "your macbook has restarted due to a problem" With the error code I have included in "additonal text". I have reported this crash to apple everytime so over 40+ times. Please help me out, I literally got this MacBook last year and never had issues in the past with previous MacBooks.

The last loaded driver was the "AppleGameControllerPersonality" which implies some type of external input device. Perhaps disconnect this device after you are finished to see if that makes a difference. If you are playing a game, then fully quit the game since games don't like to be put to sleep & wake again.

And the panic itself is referencing some connected interface device:

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffe001d63fb64): Driver IOUserServer(com.apple.driverkit.AppleUserHIDDrivers-0x1000010ea) has crashed too many times

If you still have issues, then run the third party app EtreCheck and post the complete report here so we can examine it for possible clues.

In the Kernel Panic summary from the EtreCheck report:

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffe002daabae0): PAC failure from kernel with D
A key while authing x16

PAC refers to Pointer Authentication Codes -- security feature

Operating system integrity - Apple Support

When Kernel Panics are different, it usually indicates a hardware issue.

The following apps shown in the EtreCheck report could possibly be causing Kernel Panics since they use Kernel Extensions, LaunchDaemons, and LaunchAgents:

  • ExpressVPN
  • Citrix
  • Zoom

I would uninstall ExpressVPN since it uses a Kernel Extension which is more likely to cause problems & Kernel Panics, plus most people don't need to use VPNs.

FYI, VPNs don't provide the privacy or security you think they do unless you are using the VPN to access resources on a business network or to access resources on your home network (assuming you have a VPN server on your home network). Usually in those situations you will be using other VPN apps than ExpressVPN. Here is an article that explains some of the issues with VPNs:

You can try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Unfortunately the diagnostics will rarely detect issues even when confirmed through other methods. If the diagnostics do report an issue, then you have a hardware issue.

Thank you for your reply. The only thing I plug in is the charger, but I do use Anki which is a simple flashcard program so maybe it is incompatible with this new update to Sequoia 15.5. It's a simple program and I never had issues with other Macbooks since 2017 with this specific program. I did install a new add on, so let me take that off and see if it makes a difference. I haven't played games so maybe my computer is recognizing the add on as a game.
