How to verify the authenticity of Beats Fit Pro earbuds?

I recently purchased a pair of Beats Fit Pro earbuds as a gift to a family member that were ultimately determined to be "counterfeit". The gift was purchased from a reputable retailer's on-line website for a price that was the same as all other retail sources were selling them for. Upon attempting to sync the earbuds it was realized that the in-app controls did not include most of the features that should have been available. With the help of a friend who spent hours on the internet trying to locate a website that could validate serial numbers, we were able to verify that my purchased product was not genuine, and thankfully I was able to return them for a full refund. We also learned that counterfeit Beats are a pretty common occurrence, and I suspect other Apple products are, as well. So, my question to the community is, "why doesn't Apple (or in this case, Beats by Dre) provide an on-line tool to verify product serial numbers without having to first "register" the product using the purchase date and serial number? It would be very helpful to be able to get a product serial number off of the packaging box, and then use an on-line tool to validate the serial number, rather than having to open the packaging, determine that its doesn't look genuine or work correctly, and then use the registration process to determine that the product is counterfeit. There are literally thousands of web pages that discuss genuine versus fake Apple (and Apple-related) products and how to "find your serial number", so clearly, counterfeit products are extremely common. But having the ability to determine valid versus counterfeit serial numbers before the item is unpackaged would be very helpful. And please, before providing rote replies about purchasing only from legitimate retailers, as I stated above, the product was purchased from a reputable retailer's on-line website. Yes, I could have purchased the item from an Apple retailer or on-line from Apple or BeatsbyDre.com, but the color I wanted was not available from either of those resources. Surely, it would be a simple feat to develop an on-line validation tool.

They absolutely do provide a method, and that is to purchase from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller only! A reputable online source is not one that is selling counterfeit products, so clearly that is the problem.

There is no serial number check that will prove that a device is valid, as any counterfeiter can copy a legitimate serial number, and that is what most of them do. It is not unusual to purchase 2 counterfeit AirPods from a third party unauthorized site and have them showing the exact same serial number. You are not even required to register a device if you do not wish to do that, so that check will also not work.

I have not seen where Apple claims you can validate a product through registration. You are not required to register the device at all for warranty coverage. The serial number check is used to verify coverage and is based on the purchase date, not by the activation date of the device. When purchased through Apple or Authorized Apple Seller, they already have the purchase date, and no further action is needed on your part.

In addition, another important reason to purchase from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller is in case your device is inadvertently locked to someone else's Apple Account. This can happen if you let a friend borrow your AirPods and they are set up on their account, but you are no longer in communication with them to remove the device from that account. The only way to do that is by removing the Activation Lock, and you will find that requires the original purchase receipt from Apple or Authorized Apple seller. That has been seen many times on this Support Site.

It really is this simple. If you are looking for a legitimate Apple accessory, purchase only from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller. Other than that, you are accepting the risks.

I won't bother to share which retailer I used because it doesn't change the conversation. I disagree with your statement that "any counterfeiter can copy a legitimate serial number, and that is what most of them do", because if a counterfeiter has access to a list of already used serial numbers, then there's no way to determine which specific item with a serial number is the genuine item and which is counterfeit. Rather, I suspect that they use a random generator that uses the basic serial number format to create serial numbers to be printed on the outside of the package. But I get your point that entering a serial number into a website on-line tool won't guarantee that the serial number is legit. But by that same token, using the on-line registration process which also requires entering a purchase date (only used for warranty period commencement) and an e-mail address (used for future "unsolicited" sales communication), also does not guarantee that a product is genuine. So, by telling customers that they can validate a product as being genuine through the registration process is very misleading, at best.
