I have got far too many photos on my Mac. I have two Photos libraries. I want to cull a lot. I need to get a new computer and want to tidy it up first! I have deleted many videos but the space taken up by my photos still remains the same. I have deleted from the recently deleted folder too.
Please- what am I doing wrong?

Sometimes it takes a while for Spotlight to reindex the drive so that the correct free space is reported. You can manually reindex Spotlight by following this Apple document: How to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support. Let it run for about 30 minutes or so depending on the amount of data to index.
Be careful as you switch computers. You say that you're running Catalina on your older iMac. When you get the new Mac, it will need to update a Photos Library to its newer Operating System. After that, the Photos Library won't be readable to the old iMac. So you may want to keep backup copies.
You may have already thought about your System Library or about iCloud-- let us know if you need help with that stuff.
