Apple Pencil Pro stops charging at 67% or 85% (or both) on an M4 iPad Pro

This is to add to the existing ticket: My Apple Pencil will not charge when conn… - Apple Community

The problem: The Apple Pencil Pro stops charging at exactly 67%. Removing it from the iPad and re-attaching sometimes works. Other times waiting 10m or so resumes the charge. Then the pencil stops at 85%. Mine resumed about an hour later. No amount of reattaching made any difference. The pencil was right out of the box, brand new. The iPad Pro was purchased in Feb 2025.

I booked an appointment with the Genius Bar and sadly the pencils do not have any battery logs. The Genius replaced the pencil under warranty. I attached it to my iPad and again, it stopped at exactly 67%. This time however it completed the charge to 100% roughly 10m later.

I will monitor the issue but I doubt both Pencils’ batteries are bad. It may be an issue with the charging block on the iPad itself.

Just putting this up for posterity and for anyone in the future it might help.

Hi. Any update on the issue? I have the same problem with my Ipad m4 and Pencil pro. I tried 3 pencils and had the shop replace the Ipad with another one. Nope, exactly the same story, however, all the pencils worked as they should with Ipad Air. So, it's either that all Ipad Pros M4 (11) have this same hardware problem or it's some sort of software bug

So here is what the Genius and I have tried:

3 different Apple Pencil Pros. All had stalled charging at the start. Some held at 67% but some didn’t.

1 USBC Pencil that charged instantly.

Tried charging on an iPad mini and it stalled.

I’m going to try the pencil on another iPad but so far, it actually looks like it’s a software issue. Two different iPads and 3 pencils kind of rules hardware. Unless every capacitative charger is broken.

All devices were on iOS 15.5 and the Pro pencil is on firmware 0128.0186.0543.0053.

Hope that helps somebody.

I’m experiencing a similar issue with my Apple Pencil (2nd generation) on my iPad Pro M2 running the latest iPadOS 18.5 update. The pencil consistently shows a charge level of 74%—it neither charges beyond this point nor discharges, even after few weeks remaining the same value (74%). While it shows as connected when magnetically attached to the side of the iPad, it immediately disconnects when removed for use. I don’t use the pencil heavily, and it was functioning perfectly when I initially purchased it with the iPad about year and few months ago.
