Stolen iPhone still shows up on Find My iPhone

Hi, everyone. My phone was stolen around 3pm on 24 May, 2025. It was put on Lost Mode shortly after, but it's been Pending ever since.

The location updated on Sunday morning at 12:42 AM. The location was a couple hours away by car, so we went there. But when I arrived, the location of the iPhone was on a roundabout. We didn't end up coming out of the car to check the roundabout, as it was very dark as this point. The Lost Mode was still pending even when I was there, and the Play Sound option says it'll play when it's connected, but it never did.

  1. How accurate is Find My iPhone? Is the location of the phone really on the roundabout, or can they "trick" it somehow to make it appear as if it were there?
  2. Has the data on my iPhone been wiped? When I Googled this question, most people said that if the device has been removed from Find My iPhone, it has been wiped. But the device is still there.

Thanks in advance.

Find My will display a "Last known Location" for up to 7 days. The phone could be anywhere at this time, because the location has not been updated.

Because your request to initiate Lost Mode is still Pending, this means that the iPhone cannot receive your instructions for one or more of the following reasons:

The battery has run down

The phone was powered off....but it still might be able to send out location information via "crowd sourcing"

The phone does not have an Internet connection where it is currently located

iPhone thieves know this of course, so they will often wrap the phone in aluminum foil to prevent the phone from either sending or receiving a signal. They can also place the phone in a Faraday bag to accomplish the same goal.

Unfortunately, there is not really anything that you can do other than check using Find My a few times each day to see if the location information has been updated and the phone has actually been placed in Lost Mode.

Has the data on my iPhone been wiped?

No, not unless you have entered a request from Find My to "Erase" the data on your iPhone and phone has a good Internet connection.......which it does not at this time.

There is no way that anyone could ever guess your correct Passcode in less than 10 tries at which point the phone locks out and will not even allow any more Passcode attempts. In addition, someone would have to know your correct Apple ID and Password to access the data on your phone.

The exception to the Passcode requirement would be if you set up a very simple phrase like 123456 or 000000, etc.

It's likely the phone was powered off, meaning it has no way to connect to the internet for lost mode to activate.

It is still findable using the find my network even after being powered off. It will attempt to report its location Shen someone who has an iPhone with the find my network enabled comes within bluetooth range. The location is relayed through the phone passing by.
