Why won't my USB Superdrive connect to new iMac models?

Hi All!, I have recently upgraded my faithful, but tired and sluggish 2013 Mac to the latest generation M4 (Sequoia 15.4.1). All was good until I tried connecting my genuine Apple USB Superdrive cd/disc player reader. The technology of the day was a USB A male connector, which plugged straight into the back of my old Mac. The new models have C connectors. I've purchased and tried a multi adaptor with C connector into port on back of new Mac and then plugging Superdrive into all USB ports (2.0 and 3.0) on adaptor. All I get is the message "USB Accessory Needs Power ... Connect Apple USB Superdrive to a USB port on this Mac". Errrr! There isn't one!!. Is my previously perfectly good Superdrive now redundant?. If so,can anybody recommend a replacement?. Any help appreciated. Thanks Guys.

The Apple SuperDrive doesn't like hubs and docks. You'll need to use a simple USB-A to USB-C plug adapter and connect the drive directly into one of the iMac's four USB-C ports.

You can find these and other similar on Amazon for about $5 each.

I have a handful of these inexpensive (not "cheap") adapters and they work fine to get power and data to USB-A devices like the SuperDrive, keyboards, mice, trackpads and printers.

What user @tbirdvet meant when they suggested "flipping the adapter over" was simply to flip the USB-C connector into the computer 180º. Sometimes that works for some reason. USB-A plugs can only connect one way (and never the right way on the first try 🤣😉). But USB-C plugs have no up/down orientation and can connect either way.
