Unable to verify passcode on my iPhone XR after getting prompt to update it

I was prompted to update iPhone passcode and received two messages. First "some iCloud data isn't syncing" and second, "Verify passcode"/ iPhone freezes when click verify.

Before you head to the Genius Bar, the only thing that I can suggest at this point is to try a Forced Restart on the iPhone.

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

This is a bit tricky for some users.

Quickly press and release the UP button

Quickly press and release the DOWN button

Hold in the SIDE button and continue to hold it in for another 20-25 seconds while ignoring the "slider". You have to keep holding until the Apple logo appears in the center of the screen. Then....you can release the SIDE button.

If the Forced Restart does not help, you are likely looking at erasing the phone and reinstalling the iOS software. Make an appointment at the Apple Store or take the phone to an authorized Apple service shop in your area for "in person" help.

Good luck

That is unusual....and frankly suspicious.

Are you sure that the message was from Apple? Scammers have become much better at making their messages appear to be from "Apple" when they are not.

Hopefully, you did not click on a link in the message, since that may have directed you to a scam site.

It is suspicious. Apple doesn't remind its users to change their Passcode.

Sorry for not being more specific. The "message i am referring came via an "Apple Account Suggestion" that appears under "Settings". See two following screen shots. The inital "suggestion" to change the passcode came the same way, but since I changed my passcode, the suggestion is longer present.

First screenshot is "Settings"

Settings - after drilling down on "Apple account suggestions". Phone freezes on this page when either the "Resume Data Sync" or "Verify" links are clicked.
