How do I archive an iMessage thread on iPhone?
I have an iMessage thread that I dont want to delete but rather archive or make inactive

There is no native way to "archive" an iMessage thread. You either delete it and never see it again or if you both stop responding to it, it will sink to the bottom of your threads list. You can also save it as a PDF if you are on Mac.
