Does deleting an iMessage conversation delete both sides?
When I permanently delete a thread in iMessages, is the conversation deleted for both sides or only me?

You only control the messages on your device when you delete a conversation. You do have the option to unsend a message where it would be removed from the recipients device, but that needs to be done within 2 minutes of sending the message.
