Apple Watch show incorrect elevation after getting wet without water lock

When I normally wash my hands with my watch on, everything is fine. However, when I wash my watch with Water Lock off (in the shower, when I have Water Lock enabled, this doesn't happen, so I assume it's related to Water Lock being off), the elevation goes completely haywire. Where I live, my elevation is normally around 20 feet (which is what my watch usually tells me), but when this happens it can go down to -900ft or up to 900ft! Maybe this is related to water interacting with the barometer, but I don't know. I have washed my watch probably around 50-ish times since I got it, and right now and last night were the only times this has happened.

The built-in barometric altimeter may depend on the openings of the watch being free of water, to get the correct reading. The Water Lock will expel water from those openings after you press the Digital Crown.
