Why won’t my headphones reconnect to my iPhone unless I unpair them and toggle Bluetooth?

So I have recently switched to iOS and I’ve found my headphones once paired and left not connected for a few hours won’t automatically reconnect I have to forget the device and turn on and off bluetooth for them to then successfully connect again, I know this is a Phone issue because it’s happening with 2 pairs of wireless headphones made by different manufacturers. But the strange part is that it is only happening with headphones, my Oura ring has never had this issue, neither has my Kronaby watch, even my Bond Tounch and nor is my PC, it for some reason seems to be completely isolated to my wireless headphones (CMF Buds Pro 2) (Soundcore Space One Pros).

If anyone has any suggestions or insight they can provide me that would be greatly appreciated as I have ran out of ideas.

Selecting the wrong device type (like "Car Stereo" instead of "Headphones") may affect auto-join behavior and audio routing on iPhones — especially on iOS 16 and later.

🔧 Why It Matters

When you pair a Bluetooth audio device, iOS lets you label it:

  • Headphone
  • Car Stereo
  • Speaker
  • Hearing Aid
  • Other

You’ll find this under:

Settings > Bluetooth > ⓘ next to the device > Device Type

⚠️ If you choose the wrong type:

  • “Car Stereo”: iOS may expect it to be used only when you're driving (and prioritize CarPlay or auto-start behavior).
  • “Speaker”: iOS may treat it more like a home speaker — not something to auto-join for personal listening.
  • “Other”: iOS doesn’t apply any special behavior, which may disable auto-join entirely.
  • “Hearing Aid”: Triggers accessibility behaviors, possibly overriding normal Bluetooth handling.

✅ Fix It

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the ⓘ next to your CMF Buds Pro 2 or Soundcore Space One Pro.
  3. Tap Device Type.
  4. Choose Headphone.

Then:

  • Put the earbuds back in the case, then take them out again.
  • See if the iPhone auto-connects properly next time.

Well, neither have I had a problem with a portable speaker, AirPods, Wyze headphones, Zik headphones, CarPlay, Oura ring, Withings blood pressure cuff, Wyze scale, Kardia ECG, Tiles, or my Apple watch.

Have you tried a factory reset on the devices that have the problem?

Have you tried Reset Network Settings?

Perhaps a long shot:

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN.

I apologise if my post came across as complaining I’m just giving all the confusing facts I’ve came across in what seems to be an isolated issue that is fairly strange. I am just looking for solution.

I have factory reset both headphones multiple times to no avail. But I actually do actively use a VPN so I will try what you suggested, very strange that this could be what is causing an issue and the fact it only seems to be with my pairs of headphones.

Edit: I have removed the VPN profile and have repaired both pairs of headphones I will attempt to reconnect them a few times over the next few days and let you know how it goes.

Thank you very much for the quick response regardless of how it goes!
