my favorites icons keep turning grey with just a letter showing. I have researched on the community and apples answers and fixes after all the usual suggestions are to restart the ipad. Well done I really have to just keep restarting my ipad instead of apple actually finding a fix. To me your suggestions are usless. Try fixing the problem will you.

Presumably you refer to the Safari browser - and the icons associated with your saved websites and pages.
As described, you have a corrupted file that resides within your Safari cached data - this file containing the website icons. This file needs to be deleted from your cached data; this file will be automatically recreated by your iPad:
Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data - use the Search dialogue to find data for "apple"
Identify the cdn-apple.com entry; with your finger, swipe the entry to the left to expose the associated red Delete button. Delete this entry (and just the entry) from the list.
Having deleted the entry, you can leave the settings page - and restart Safari.
Force-restart your iPad - and then repeat deletion of the corrupted file as previously described.
Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)
If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:
Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)
Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
