Will a new Apple TV remote work with an older Apple TV?

Last night we couldn't get our Apple TV remote to work. One of use tried to open it and we think we broke it and need to order a new one. Is it as simple of that? Will the new remotes work on an older Apple TV (several years old)?

Can someone help me?

Yes. All current remotes sold by Apple will work with all 3 generations of Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD.

Don't try to open them, as none of them have any internal batteries or user accessible items inside.

Did you try to re-charge the remote? It may have just been low on battery.
