I have the MX 870 printer and gave up on using it with my new mac two years ago. Today, on a whim, I downloaded a driver from a newer PIXMA printer. The MX920 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 16.70.0.0 (Mac) worked without much effort. Can using this alternate driver harm the OS?

No, it will NOT harm macOS, but you may not get full printer functionality by not using the proper driver for this printer. Alternately, if your printer is AirPrint capable, you don't need to use a printer driver at all.

I see no mention of AirPrint in Canon's specifications or in Apple's About AirPrint article, and a Web search turns up multiple forum threads saying the MX870 does not support it.
