When I select a text field, the keyboard used to immediately appear. Now I have to constantly do a two-step process of selecting the menu at the bottom of the screen and then choosing the keyboard to begin typing. Using iPad OS 18.5

Is your iPad connected to some type of external keyboard? If so, then that might be why. Best thing you can do is disconnect it and see what happens. Great luck!
I may have solved the problem by enabling Hover Typing in keyboards in Accessibility, then turning Hover Typing off and restarting the iPad. Seems that all apps are automatically calling up the keyboard now as before, but I I had restarted before iPad before and the restart alone did not restore keyboard function.
