Protection of data privacy when taking iPhone in for repair

I recently visited the Kwun Tong Apple service center an hour ago to fix my iPhone 16+ USB-C port, which charges but does not transfer data. After waiting 45 minutes, the front desk staff performed diagnostics but found nothing wrong.

I was then asked to leave my phone for further testing. While I understand disabling "Find My iPhone," I was also asked to **unlock my phone** and hand it over to technicians in the back office for service, which would take several hours. This raised privacy concerns, as I was expected to leave my unlocked device unattended with no assurances about data security.

The staff simply stated that Apple Support follows the same procedure, but I was not comfortable with this request. Had I known beforehand, I would not have proceeded, as it resulted in two hours lost without a resolution.

Is this standard Apple practice? What measures are in place to ensure customer data privacy during service?

I appreciate your response and hope for a more secure service process.

Based on my experience with Apple Service Centers for both my Mac and iPhone, I’ve observed a consistent process when it comes to repairs or diagnostics that require sending the device to the back office. Before the device is taken in, I am required to sign a Data Security Risk Consent Form online. This form explicitly states that any potential loss of data is the sole responsibility of the device owner, and it is strongly advised to create a full backup before handing over the device. Apple makes it clear that they are not liable for any data loss that may occur during the repair or service process. This protocol underscores the importance of backing up your data in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Follow these steps before you bring your device to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider, or before you send it to Apple.

- "To protect your information and save time, follow these steps before you get service for your device."

That's what Apple advises but there is residual information on the device. If you are truly concerned you can always erase your device entirely and later restore it from a backup which you should be making regularly anyway. Apple cannot guarantee that you won't get an erased device anyway when you go to collect your iPhone.
