You did not buy a new phone. You bought a refurbished phone with no warranty, even though the phone was cleaned and repackaged neatly to appear as if it were new.
If the store told you that the phone was "new", return the phone for a refund.

That usually indicates the iPhone is a refurbished model. In most cases it also means the iPhone was not sold from an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Reseller as you state. If you were not expecting a refurbished model, return to that store and request a refund. Then, purchase an iPhone at an Apple Authorized Reseller.
