Getting AppleCare through a Retailer:

As for retailers, many actually go through AppleCare, rather than themselves. But, others go through a third-party like Asurion for the coverage.

Mac Sold me a Retuned Device:

My Mac ended up being a return item that was never changed in Apple's database. They saw that on record, and made the change. The Mac was a failed device after plugging in a gaming keyboard, and it never powered on.

Point being: Make sure this is not a returned item. How to do that would depend on the retailer. So, ask a store manger, if they can assist you with a transaction research.

I'd be concerned since they aren't an authorized seller. You can contact Apple and share the phones serial number with them and see what they can tell you. But it's rather suspect a new phone wouldn't have a valid warranty. If it were me, I'd return the phone to whoever you purchased it from and get your money back.
