How can I update my iPhone to iOS 16?

Use a computer or the Software Update function in Settings. If you encounter an issue other than the one listed below, describe it in this thread.

Only the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPad 5, or original iPad Pro can still be updated to exactly 16. Any other unit either isn't capable of it or can run 17 or 18; Apple no longer signs 16 for them.

There are different ways to ensure the highest iOS that your device will support is installed on your device. When updating, your device will update to the highest version currently available that it will support, or it will just say it is up to date (and can't go any higher) and won't install anything. If you want to run a higher system version than your current device is capable of running, you need to buy a newer device.
