I have an apple mouse that I haven't used for about a year, it's been safely stored for that time but now seems to have died! should I have fed it? (joke) but seriously any ideas if its actually dead or just hibernating?

Yes, you should have fed it (not a joke). Lithium rechargeable batteries, if left uncharged for significant amount of time, lose their ability to take a charge. This is, most likely, the case here. Unfortunately, they are not DIY replaceable, nor will Apple do so either.
Again, most likely. You are not alone with this. I too have found a number of my seldom used devices, that rely on lithium rechargeable batteries, fail to take a charge if left uncharged for too long of a period. That's why I now have a calendar reminder to charge these devices every 2-3 weeks to avoid this. Haven't had this issue since. You may want to do the same.
