Unlocking iPhone when connected to Car

Is there any way of disabling requiring unlocking the iPhone when it is connected to the vehicle? I try to do any calling/texting/navigation by voice command and it never fails that it will tell me I need to unlock my iPhone first. It kind of defeats the purpose of hands free when you are driving if you have to physically pick up the phone to unlock it before being able to do things hand free.

iPhone XS, iOS 18

If it didn’t require that it be unlocked then whoever stole your phone could use it in their car. You can keep the phone unlocked by launching an app that keeps the screen open, such as Maps. If you have CarPlay set up you don’t have to unlock it after setting it up, because it knows your car. (Of course, if your car is stolen with the phone in it that wouldn’t be good.)

If it’s connected to the car…then getting stolen isn’t really an issue. Kind of hard to get stolen when I’m in my car and driving. When disconnected it could revert back to auto locked or requiring being opened. Sometimes you have to think past a canned response.

I strongly resent calling my carefully composed response as “canned”, I have never seen this as an issue before, so it could not possibly be “canned”. If you have anything useful to say, then say it, don’t attack other users in this forum trying to help.
