How do I fix the missing dock sound effect on my new Apple silicon MacBook?

Very specific, very minor, illogically annoying issue! When minimising or opening items from the dock, the swoosh sound effect has stopped working. This is not the UI sound effects option - that is on and emptying the bin still makes a sound effect, it is not all sound - app notifications, music and video playback are all fine. It's just this one minor thing and it's driving me crazy!

It's a new apple silicon model so resetting NVRAM/PRAM is not the answer, and I have tried restarting coreaudiod as per instructions found elsewhere but no change.

Same behaviour in all states, connected to external monitor, using AirPods or just the MacBook connected to nothing.

I need the swoosh!

I just remembered that dragging an app icon out of the Dock makes the swoosh sound when you release it. Perhaps that is what you remember. That is part of the ‘Play user interface sound effects’ option.

+1

If "Play user interface sound effects" is On..

Then the swoosh sound can still be heard when an Icon is removed from the Dock.

Plus you should hear a thump when putting something into the Trash and a swoosh when emptying the Trash.
