When I plug in my MacBook, it will charge for a few seconds, but if the cord is even touched it stops charging and will not reconnect unless I move it around a lot.

The MagSafe magnet is on the computer-side, so that is what might pick up stray bits of metallic debris. (and that makes sent because you don't want a magnet on a cord waving around near your computer or other devices.)
