How do I fix a black screen on my MacBook M1 Pro by resetting NVRAM?
The issue:
I was doing some work on my MacBook and suddenly the screen went black. I could only see shadows of the components on the screen, like a very blurry dark grey ball (the mouse) moving, the brightness changing, but not the entire thing. Only vague shades of black in terms of brightness all over the screen. The sound system and all still worked btw. I tried resetting, putting it in safe mode-everything, even tried connecting it through HDMI to my TV, but that had other compatibility issues.
I even took it to the service centre, unfortunately my area didn't have any official Apple centres nearby so I had to resort to other 'service centres' where they told me it'd cost me an obnoxious $1000 to fix.
The fix:
A year later, after countless failed attempts to fix this over 12 months, one thing I tried very randomly was resetting the NVRAM. Which is basically shut down the device, and while it's turned off, click CMD+OP+R+P all at once for about 20 seconds. Guess which black screen of death resurrected.
Turns out what had happened was that the backlight turned off suddenly, I don't know why or how, and it wasn't turning back on. Most likely a glitch somewhere because restarting the device usually fixes it.
I've seen this same issue all over the internet on this same model and other similar ones, but there were too many things to try to fix it. It was really confusing, somehow this was what worked for me after trying almost everything else multiple times.
This might seem obvious to some, but many people with this exact same issue had taken to many platforms, addressing how exhausting trying all the fixes was. Hoping this helps someone out there!
