Fixing flash drive that won't mount

I have a 128 gig flash drive that suddenly self-ejected and then would not mount and did not appear in Disk Utility. I read more than 20 articles on how to fix the problem and none of them mentioned the fix I discovered. All the articles go through similar checklists, and most say if none of the above work, find a professional recovery service. One article suggested opening the enclosure and provided tips for repairing broken solder joints. So I opened the enclosure (just had to remove 2 tiny screws) and much to my pleasant surprise, discovered that it had a micro XD card. So I simply removed the card and put it into a card reader, and bingo, problem solved! Odd that none of the articles mentioned this, so maybe this is not a common setup for flash drives. But if you are having the same issue, definitely open up your drive to see if you have a micro XD card inside before throwing it away!

Thanks for sharing that tip!

That’s an excellent discovery—and a perfect reminder that not all flash drives are built the same under the hood! What you found is actually more common than people realize: some "USB flash drives" are really just microSD cards paired with a USB reader, all neatly tucked into a single housing. These setups are especially popular with off-brand or promotional drives, or those using cheap, modular manufacturing. The fact that none of the 20+ articles you read even mentioned the possibility highlights how narrowly most troubleshooting guides are written.
