Recommendations for wifi 6e USB C adaptor

Just purchased a M4 pro mini and realized my wifi adapter I put in the window is PC only.

i will be putting the mini in a cabinet behind my tv and want to put an external wifi antenna in a window that is beside the tv. This is for a RV setup. Cable length will be 3-4 ft between mini and window.

I was using an Asus AX67 wifi adapter on my pc and it worked fantastic but now will need a MAC solution.

antenna needs to be small and light which is why I can’t get something like a normal router.

The mini is perfect for RV life due to size and power but just need to figure out the wifi connection

Instead of a USB-C Wi-Fi adapter, I suggest you consider using a USB-C to Ethernet adapter, along with an external Wi-Fi bridge. This would avoid any issues with macOS driver support for a USB-C Wi-Fi adapter.

This would consist of two items:

  1. A USB-C to Ethernet adapter (or Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet for better bandwidth).
  2. A Wi-Fi bridge/repeater that supports Wi-Fi 6E. Something like the GL.iNet GL-AXT1800 (Slate AX) or TP-Link RE815XE should do the trick.

Mount the bridge near your window. These devices connect to your Wi-Fi and pass the connection over Ethernet. You would then connect your mini, by Ethernet, to the bridge.

Several things to clarify.

Wi-Fi, whether it's regular old Wi-fFi or 6e or 7 or whatever, is localized. That means the RV needs to have a router somewhere in or near it for the wi-fi adapter to connect to. It won't magically connect to Wi-Fi if you are out in the middle of nowhere or driving down the high way. so not sure why you need an antenna to be placed in a window. That makes very little sense when dealing with Wi-Fi.

Unless you are parked in an RV park that offers Wi-Fi 6e, then that makes a bit of sense, but you'll still likely want to be parked pretty near the Wi-Fi router or repeater in the park as 6e is pretty short ranged anyway.

If the actual router is inside or on the RV, the external antenna is pretty unnecessary as the size of most RVs preclude any real issue with connecting to a router that is just a few feet away even if the Mac is in a cabinet. It's unlikely there would be any significant interference within the area of the RV.

Why are you connecting the Mac mini to a Tv from inside a cabinet? The Mac mini is not like an Apple TV you can control with a remote, so you will need to have a keyboard and mouse connected to it as well, and for that usually a desk is required, so the TV is not very functional unless you are using it near a flat surface for the keyboard and mouse.

With that said, many Wi-Fi 6e adapters should work on a Mac. Good reliable brands include brands like Netgear or Tp-Link.

Sorry, you are correct. You won't need the adapter. Somehow I was thinking about a Mac laptop, not your mini ... so, yes, you would just connect an Ethernet cable between the mini and the TP-Link respective Ethernet ports.

Thank you for the reply.

My current setup is a desktop PC and we were not able to get a decent signal for wifi until I purchased the Asus USB AC68 and put it in a window. Amazing how it improved the signal strength. I can move it below the window and drop signal down to one bar. Might have to do with the metal frame on the RV. In any case running an external antenna makes all the difference no matter where we are traveling.

we put the computer in a cabinet behind the tv more for esthetics and space concerns and run a wireless keyboard and mouse by putting the antenna on a usb cable and poke it outside the cabinet. 4k tv is our monitor so it is all nice and tidy. A lap and fold down cup holder for the mouse on our couch is all we use or a folding tv table for power sessions lol.

I can’t use a normal router as using the resorts wifi for a source not a wired connection like a cable modem. Due to the changing nature of the source signal as we setup in different locations a normal extender probably would not work. Contacted TP link support and they recommended around 50ft max for distance to source router. I was actually looking at some sort of extender as that would be perfect if the range was good.

Most of the other adapters like that net gear are for windows based systems only.

contacted apple support but they could not find anything either

Was looking at the TP RE813XE and have it in my cart. Range is my only concern as to support said to keep within 50 ft of source. Not sure what it requires for operating signal strength.
