I am trying to connect my iPad to my PC to load some movies onto it. I've gone thru every step including installing the drivers which I see installed but when I open iTunes the iPad doesn't show up at all.
I am getting really frustrated

Be aware that iTunes for Windows has been retired - having been replaced by the Apple Devices App for Windows.
While iTunes remains usable with Windows 7 and earlier, for Windows 10/11 you will need to install Apple Devices on your Windows PC:

What instructions are you following? They sound outdated. iTunes is deprecated; for Windows, Apple has an Apple Devices app now. See Install the Apple Devices app on Windows – Apple Support
