when I start a movie through my appletv app on my iPhone 12 the sound will not play. I’ve made sure the silence button is up & the volume is up. Still nothing :-(

Please examine the codecs used in the media file. With Mac, you may use Invisor Lite (or any other tool that uses MediaInfo libraries). The default iPhone player software likes best: AAC audio codec or alternatively AC-3 in an MP4/M4V/MOV file.

I can’t replicate your issue on my iPhone 12 with any of the video files currently on my phone. So perhaps the issue is something specific to your media file?
