Is it really necessary to have a phone case on an apple phone if you carry insurance?
Is it really necessary to add a case to your Apple phone? It seems to make it heavier and harder to hold.

Let's consider this scenario:
— You decide to go "caseless"
— You are traveling in an area with few tech providers of any kind
— You drop the phone and find it suffered more than cosmetic damage that would otherwise be a non-issue had you a case.
— You cannot find local repairs
— Returning to more populated areas, you find it will take days or weeks to get the phone repaired or replaced
Insurance does not get you a new or repaired phone instantly. A case is not perfect, but 90% of them can reduce a fatal crash to a fender-bender.

Most insurance policies claim to cover theft and loss with limits, and don’t cover damage.
AppleCare does cover accidental damage, though with a deductible, as well as with limits.
The case means I’m less likely to need a day or two dealing with AppleCare, unscheduled.
Or dealing with scratches in the lens or display, given the case edge protrudes slightly.
And to the immense chagrin of the Apple accountants, I also don’t replace my iPhone yearly.
If you're referring to the accidental damage coverage through AppleCare, be aware that there are deductibles you pay for each incident. Those are $29 for screen/glass replacement and $99 for other damage.

That's a personal decision. I would never own a device as expensive as an iPhone and not put it in a good protective case as well as have a screen protector on. Cases really don't weigh much. But they sure do offer a good degree of protection should the unfortunate happen.
