Magic Keyboard and ESR keyboard not typing on iPad Air

I have the ESR keyboard and iPad it on it. Bluetooth says it's connected but will not type For the Magic Keyboard I can't get it to connect to bluetooth. Yes I cleaned the connectors. Could it be the setting on the iPad that won't let me type? I can type on the keyboard on the ipad
