How do I change my iCloud email password?

Seems like I used to easily periodically change my iCloud email password, in fact the last time was about 2 years ago. I only use Mail on my iPhone 16 Pro and iPad Pro M4, and I am on the latest OS versions for both. Due to the recent massive data discoveries on the dark web, I'm changing all of my passwords again, but cannot figure out where/ how to change my iCloud email password.

It does not appear that I can change it any longer via the Settings on either device, including via the Password app nor in any mail settings for my iCloud email account. Very strange, I must be missing something which has been changed in iOS and iPadOS for doing this...

If you're looking to change your iCloud email (Apple ID) password on the latest versions of iOS and iPadOS, the process is a bit different than it used to be.

To change your iCloud (Apple ID) password, open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap your name at the top to open your Apple ID settings. From there, select Sign-In & Security, which is a newer section introduced in recent OS versions. Then, tap Password. You’ll be prompted to enter your device passcode, after which you can enter and confirm your new password.

Keep in mind that changing this password affects your entire Apple ID, not just iCloud Mail. That includes iCloud Drive, iMessage, FaceTime, the App Store, and more. Once you've changed the password, you may be asked to re-enter it on your other Apple devices or in specific apps, such as Mail. If you're using iCloud Keychain, it should offer to update your stored credentials automatically.

The reason you no longer see an option to change the password in the Mail settings or the Passwords section in Settings is because Apple has centralized all account and security controls under the Apple ID settings. You now manage everything through Settings > Apple ID > Sign-In & Security, rather than through individual apps or settings areas.

Hey!

You can either go into settings ---> account (icloud) -----> signin+security ----> and enter your device passcode. If you have an iPhone, it might ask for it's passcode. If you are unable to find this, go to Apple's Website (Click here), click on the little icon that looks like a person (towards the top right) and enter your email and click on "Forgot password". Follow the instructions (it may ask for verification codes from your devices), and you can change your password if you are having problems following the first option. Good luck!

The recent “16 billion credentials leak” reporting is an aggregation of data from old and previously-known breaches. It is not new breaches. (details)

Here is how to set up app-specific passwords, when working with third-party apps accessing Apple accounts and services:

Sign in to apps with your Apple Account using app-specific passwords - Apple Support

If you’re using Apple apps for accessing Apple services, the same Apple Account password works everywhere, and once it’s been updated in one place and with iCloud Keychain enabled, then at most an app restart, or maybe a device restart, should get it working again everywhere.

Get your account recovery-related info reviewed first before making an Apple Account password change, though. Phone numbers, trusted devices, etc. Maybe set up an account recovery contact, too.

Thank you, this is the best explanation and I had just about decided that your last paragraph summed up the what and why changes to the OS in this area. I am not as adventurous as I used to be about just clicking through in my mind what is the likely meaning of my exploration of the Settings changes I see vs my assumptions about the actual outcome to OS changes like this, and my queries to Apple Support resulted in canned videos and instructions that did not explain these areas and changes - the closest thing was “how to reset forgotten password” which was not my case and likely to wreak all kinds of unnecessary havoc to my time.

Onward through the fog, and later tonight I will confidently go through this procedure, and yes I did an initial “dipping my toes” into this and your suggested procedure lines up with what I am seeing, and there is a point where my device passcode is requested on the way to the actual password change screen.
