I'm assuming that you purchased this Apple Pencil (USB-C) model directly either from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller, and not from another third-party source.

If that is the case, and if you purchased it within the last 14 days, you can return it for either a full refund or a replacement.

If after that time frame, I suggest you try the following to see if they can help resolve this issue:

  • Start by fully charging the Pencil. Plug the Pencil into your iPad Air’s USB-C port or use a USB-C cable. It should charge without requiring any pairing. Note: This Pencil model doesn't pair via Bluetooth — so you won’t see it in Settings > Bluetooth. It should just work when you touch it to the screen.
  • Next, test by using it with supported apps. For example, open the Apple Notes app, Freeform, or Procreate, and try writing/drawing directly. If nothing happens, that’s a red flag.
  • Next, verify that its tip is not damaged. Unscrew and reseat the tip. If it’s too loose or damaged, the iPad may not register it at all.
  • Simply restart your iPad
  • Finally, try another USB-C cable.
