That's correct. An iPhone X can run iOS 16.7.11 and nothing higher. It doesn't have the hardware required to be updated. If you need a higher version iOS than your phone can support, then it's time to retire your now old iPhone and buy a new iPhone.

You are reporting your iPhone to be iPhone XS, but the footer here shows iPhone X.

You are reporting being unable to download iOS 17, which is also consistent with this being iPhone X, and not iPhone XS.

iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE 2nd gen are the oldest that can get to iOS 17 and iOS 18. iPhone X cannot.

To confirm your model, see Settings > General > About

Your tag line says that you have an iPhone X. If you are running iOS 16 and Software Update tells you that you are up to date, that would indicate that you have an iPhone X that cannot update past iOS 16. (An iPhone XS would be able to update to iOS 18.)

The OP's other thread – which I am having trouble locating now – was about being unable to download ChatGPT. The ChatGPT app requires iOS 17.0 or later. There, the OP said that the phone was a "X" and a "sx".

iOS 17 is no longer available. But, even if it was, your iPhone X would not be able to run iOS 17.

Your iPhone X is too old. You need a new phone.

You cannot install IOS 17, on a iPhone X, the highest version of IOS is IOS 16 for the iPhone X, I recommend getting a iPhone 15 or an iPhone 13 or iPhone 16, to get IOS 17.

iOS 17 is no longer available. The user will need to find a phone that supports iOS 18 and ideally, also supports iOS 26. An iPhone 15 or 16 would be recommended to handle updates for the next 7 years or so.
