I just purchased a nightstand charging unit which shows an iPhone in the horizontal position so that it can be used as a nightstand clock. When I try to mount my iPhone 15 to this stand the magnet is not strong enough to hold my phone horizontally. Is there any way to get the phone into standby mode in a vertical position?

I'm guessing you didn't purchase a MagSafe charging stand? If you own a MagSafe stand and use a case which is also MagSafe, you can turn your phone any direction you want. You can't use NightStand Mode vertically.
Get a stand which will work for the purpose you want.

Is your phone in a case and if so, is the case MagSafe? If your phone is in a case which is NOT MagSafe, the magnet won't be strong enough to hold your phone horizontally.
I purchased a message stand but it doesn’t hold the phone horizontally. The phone is too heavy for the magnet
