Curious on why fonts are part of the system settings when they have no use. Could it be more useful as an app?

The current settings for fonts are a 404 not found ability of the iPhone. It could be better used as an app so I can delete it and save some memory.

iPhone 15, iOS 18

The fonts likely take up very marginal space on your iPhone and even if it were deletable it likely wouldn’t even be noticeable to your storage. I don’t think it would make sense to house it in a separate app as it doesn’t have much purpose for Apple’s main interface. The Fonts setting on your iPhone is for managing custom fonts that you have installed through third-party apps, which you can use in supported apps. However, you cannot change the system-wide font style.

The fonts you see in System fonts are those you would see in an app that allows using different fonts (Pages, MS Word, some email apps, for example). The list you see is what is automatically included in iOS. Not all are downloaded automatically, but can easily be from that settings interface. Depending on how you use the phone and with what apps, this may useful or not to any given individual.

You can, if you choose, also install third party apps (My Fonts). This is not however required by any means.

so basically it serves no purpose to have on the iPhone? (Im not actually worried about the space) doesn’t make sense to me to have as you need to pay for a subscription to use any of the font apps on iPhones. Requiring another third party to be sold my info by apple with nothing in return.

It does serve purpose on your iPhone, not just custom font apps but also apps that use the font menu such as Freeform and Keynote. Now they are there for those who use it and you don’t have to use it if you don’t like.
