Why are there new fonts on my iPhone 12?

I have an iPhone 12 and after updating to the current IOS Ive noticed where there was zero system fonts listed to know dozens that appear downloaded and hundreds more with the option to download. I haven't read or seen that was included in anything. Any info would be appreciated.

It used to be that Apple did not provide any info about the fonts installed in iOS, in contrast to MacOS which has a special app called Font Book to see and manage them. More recently they have started listing all the iOS installed fonts in the Fonts setting, plus others than can be downloaded from Apple if you want them. Normally these fonts (and any you get elsewhere) can only be used in an app with a font menu, like Pages.

I don't know whether the ones marked as downloadable are new or have always been there but now you can save space on your device if you don't need them.

It's also possible to add fonts downloaded from places other than Apple, normally by using a 3rd party app. I use AnyFont.

More notice or no notice? I mean are you suggesting that I'm the only person who has noticed this??

You might be the only person who has asked about it in this forum, I don't remember any other posts. Here is something about it from a different forum:

A phone which doesnt have ANY of them then downloaded to an update and boom there are now hundreds of them

That's mistaken, the fonts have always been there, only the list is new. There used to be lists online but people seem to have given up trying to update these some time ago, e.g.

how does one get rid of them along with all the "analitical data" that has taken over 5 gigs of space in the matter of 2 days

There's no way to remove installed system fonts as far as I know. To ask apple to add that feature in future ios updates, you can use

I don't have any info about "analytical data", probably best to ask a separate question on that.

I just find it strange it from zero to a very large list

Actually it is long overdue to let users know what fonts are available in iOS, just like they tell you what comes with a Mac. For maximum compatibility in text display, they should ideally be the same.

Fonts included with macOS Sequoia - Apple Support

I don't know why Apple's finally providing this info has not received more notice, or whether ios 18 actually has any more fonts installed than earlier versions. Personally I think it's a good thing to now have a list of them.

who needs wingdings for a system font

Anyone who wants to display wingdings in a word processing document needs some font containing them installed on their system.

If you feel for some reason that Apple is including too many fonts in iOS or that the way they are providing for managing them can be improved, you can let them know via

A phone which doesnt have ANY of them then downloaded to an update and boom there are now hundreds of them all with their own copyrights and version numbers going back to the 80s, yet there is no info about any of it to be found on the interwebs...lol

well tell me this, how does one get rid of them along with all the "analitical data" that has taken over 5 gigs of space in the matter of 2 days
