Confused About Factory Installed Fonts on my iPhone

This is hardly important, but I was in Settings and noticed there were fifty or so Fonts pre-installed in my iPhone XR.

I was scrolling through and found several that I found aesthetically pleasing.

I then proceeded to ‘My Fonts’ thinking I could switch to say ‘Futura’ or ‘Copperplate’ but was instead directed to the App Store.

I was immediately put off because the apps I looked at seemed substandard and were loaded with trackers.

Could someone please explain why the iPhone has all of these fonts pre-installed that are seemingly inaccessible to the user?

I must be missing something here.

Thanks in advance!

iPhone XR, iOS 18

Installed fonts are normally only accessible in apps which have a font menu. You cannot change the user interface.

Where exactly do you want to use them?

You can normally use apps like AnyFont to install extra fonts without problems, but again, only apps like Pages with a font menu can use them. To ask Apple to make iOS more flexible in this area, you can use

Thank you for replying Tom, your explanation makes sense. At least the fonts have some reason for existing albeit a marginal one.

I didn’t have a specific use in mind but rather naively assumed I could set a font as my ‘default’ and use it for texts, emails etc.

I’ll try it in Pages! I’ll also check out the app you recommended, but as I said, switching fonts isn’t imperative.

I was more perplexed as to why the Fonts were pre-loaded on my iPhone at all with no apparent means to utilize them.

Your explanation has solved that mystery. Thanks again Tom and have a good day.
