MacBook Pro Taking too long to install OS 15.5

Updating the computer to OS 15.5 from the previous version of 15.4. Computer is on wifi. Lot of disk space. I did a back up before starting the download and install from the System Settings panel. The computer has been grinding away "installing update" for the past 7 hours. This has not happened with prior updates. Can I stop this process and try it again? What can I do differently to get the update installed without having the computer out of service for so long?

You must have the patience of a Saint...

I would force quit a shutdown and reboot as normal and see where you are.

Many times you find the update completed and all is well; a glitch.

You can always force quit a shutdown by holding the power button/TouchID for ~6-10 sec.

Force Shut down your Mac.

Log out, sleep, wake, restart or shut down your Mac

if you need to try again run the update from a SafeBoot Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

Login and try again.
