Understanding Push Notifications for Microsoft Teams on iPhone

Does anyone know anything about what my potential employer calls "push notifications?" He asked "I need you have your Push notification turned on for Microsoft Teams [v. 25151.505.3727.5755] on your phone, so you don't miss a message from me."

I have no idea what he is talking about. I am using a Mac Mini 2020 running Mac OS Sonoma (14.6.1) and my cell phone is an Apple iPhone SE.

Thank you.

On your phone, go to Settings>Notifications>Teams>Allow Notifications and enable it. I also suggest that you set Notification delivery for "Immediate." Under Alerts, enable everything.

On your Mac, go to System Settings>Teams>Allow Notifications and enable. I would suggest selecting "Alerts" as your notification preference. Turn on everything in the first box below that.

Push notifications are alerts that show up on your phone whenever you get a new message or update in an app, even if you're not actively using it. Think iMessage, even if you’re not using your iPhone, you still get notifications when a text comes in.

To turn on push notifications for Microsoft Teams, you’ll need to open the app on your iPhone, go to settings, and make sure that notifications are allowed. Once you do that, you should start receiving updates for any messages or mentions in Teams.

Since you’re using a Mac and an iPhone, you’re set up for notifications across both devices, that is if you have Teams on your Mac.

One additional thing to note is, check that notifications are enabled for Teams if you utilize focus mode, if you do use that feature. For instance, I have a Work focus mode to allow work specific notifications (Outlook, Teams, etc.) to come in during a certain time period in the day. But I won’t include Teams in any of my other focus mode, like Sleep, Do not disturb, etc.

Here is the support doc for setting up notifications.

I have it on my devices, but rarely use it. We use it at times at the college where I work, but not consistently. You can contact someone just as easily via college email since it is Exchange and we get push notifications that way.

We have Google WorkSpace at my university. There is a chat function, but no one uses it. We all just email. If I never have to hear that sound of the Teams notification again, I'll be a happy person.
