My MacBook Pro fails to restore devices

whenever i try to restore something using finder or disk utility, it always fails. ill plug it in, click restore, and it will immediately say it cannot read the disk when before it was working fine. the device im trying to restore will be doing absolutely nothing while my mac is stuck on 'restoring this device' with no option to eject or anything. eventually, i have to unplug the device which causes it to immediately go dark and start to boot up wiped. then it just gets stuck on the restoring screen (mac) on finder thinking its still resotring it meaning i cant shut down, log out, restart ect because ' an iOS device is being restored' even when its not iOS?? i have to force quit/relaunch finder, and its still stuck on restoring but will let me restart which turns back on like nothing ever happened. same with disk utiloty but instead it completely corrupts it. ive tried apple diagnostics (which it always fails to find a server so offline) and shows nothing. any help without apple store/resetting??

"Restore" is a magic word with several strongly divergent and Extremely loaded Meanings.

There is no Direct Restore in Finder.

Restore inside Disk Utility is among THE worst choices for terminology on the Mac, and means NOTHING like what is expected.

Restore in DFU mode means something COMPLETELY different again.

The only really mnemonic use of "Restore" is inside Time Machine.APP.

>> Please clarify in the simplest of terms, what is it exactly that you are trying to accomplish, and DO NOT use the word Restore in your description.

-------

Also, we can not see your Mac.

When you "plug it in" we have NO Concept of exactly what is being plugged into what, because you have used too many pronouns and the context is not clear. Please use NOUNS, even if it sounds hokey, so that clearest meaning can be conveyed.
