Does unplugging power disconnect USB drive on adapter?

If I have a USB drive and an external power source, both plugged into the adapter at the same time. Will the USB drive get disconnected if I unplug the external power source?

I have an iPad 11th gen A16 running the latest iPadOS version.

Short answer: Yes, there’s a good chance your USB drive may momentarily disconnect when you unplug the external power source from the Multiport Adapter, even if the drive is still physically connected.

A bit longer answer: The reason why is that the adapter is designed to prioritize power passthrough from the USB-C port (which supplies power to both the iPad and connected peripherals). When you remove the power source, the iPad suddenly becomes the sole power provider for the USB drive. That shift can cause a brief voltage drop or power negotiation reset, which the system often interprets as a device disconnect.
