How long can my iPad Pro 2nd generation run iPadOS 17?

I am having trouble getting clear indication of when support will end for iOS 17 which I understand is the latest operating system that iPad Pro 2nd generation will run. Can anyone give some clarification on this for me? Thank you.

Apple doesn't pre-announce end-of-support dates. That said, history demonstrates that iPad models typically receive five to seven years of hardware and OS-update support from initial release of a device model. In the latter period of support, update support becomes limited to occasional security updates.

While older devices continue to have utility beyond the mainstream period of support, they will inevitably become more prone to unpatched and emerging security threats and exploits. Be aware that some websites and online services require devices to be using a fully supported OS/browser versions, in particular financial and banking services that sometimes only support the current and prior one or two major OS versions.

Your second generation iPad Pro (released June 2017) is certainly within its twilight - and for this reason, if using your iPad for sensitive or financial purposes, you might be well advised to explore replacement with a newer and fully supported model of iPad. The second generation iPad Pro is currently listed by Apple as "vintage", this being the step prior to being declared obsolete.

"Currently, Apple is providing security updates for iOS 16, iOS 17, and iOS 18. While older versions like iOS 15 and iOS 16 have received recent security patches, it's likely these will be the last updates for those versions. As of July 2025, devices on iOS 16 and older are potentially vulnerable to security issues that will not be addressed by Apple."

that being said even if one have an older ios version where there may have been fixed security things in newer versions it does not start some beacon to shady folk that now your device is dead in the water, it would be pretty safe to use unless one surf in more shady pages online.
