My Apple account / iCloud were/are compromised.

So as the title says my iCloud has been compromised. I don’t know how they did because there are no new devices in my settings.

Whoever it was they had complete control of my phone and managed to factory reset my phone which resulted in data loss. No, I did not have iCloud backup but I wish I did. Please don’t ask me why I didn’t have it turned on. This all happened in December of 2023.

Fast forward to September of 2024 I had to make a new apple account after I got myself locked out of my old one hence my username. With this new one I forgot to enable security keys in time and I got a text for a 2FA code that I didn’t request.  So now this one is compromised as well.

Now before I make yet another Apple account. First thing(s) I’m going to do on that new apple account is enable a recovery key and security keys.

Is it recommended that I also change my number or is that overkill considering I’m going to have both security keys and recovery key? Needless to say I roll my eyes wherever I hear Apple talking about “privacy”.

Thank you to anyone that reads this and apologies for any typos, I only have one working hand at the moment.

Yes I checked the article

  • You receive a two-factor authentication code (either on a trusted device or via text message) that you didn't request.
  • You notice unusual activity, such as messages that you didn't send, deleted items that you didn’t delete, account details that you didn't change or don't recognize, trusted devices that you didn't add or don't recognize, or purchase activity that you don't recognize.

I didn’t see any unrecognized devices on my Apple Account however the two things listed above in bold still happened. Also, wouldn’t changing my password not help at all if someone already managed to get into my account?

A problem that has been ongoing since 2023 and across multiple Apple Accounts is unlikely to be solved here today, whatever might be happening.

You’ll get the same well-meaning (and correct!) suggestions you’ve undoubtedly received before, and will have considered and have implemented as appropriate, as well.

Hardware security keys and a recovery key and lockdown mode and stolen device protection and advanced data protection (etc) can be part of a possible solution for an account security problem, but what that problem might be here is unclear.

With a forgotten password or lost device or ill-considered configuration, adding additional account security can quite possibly also lock out all access. Permanently.

To be absolutely clear, Apple devices can be hacked. Those exploits known are targeted, and are exceedingly expensive, based on available information. People targeted by well-funded adversaries will need help well beyond what can be offered here, or in most any other forum.
