Unable to Schedule Charge my M3 iPad Air

Over the last couple of weeks since upgrading my old iPad Pro to a new M3 11 inch iPad Air (iPadOS 18.5) with Magic Keyboard, I have had issues with the charging of my new iPad. After some time & persistence I have been able to reproduce & define the issue.

When the iPad is left idle for approximately 1 hour or more & then connected to a AC power source to charge the battery, the battery will not charge. According to the Battery’s Settings, the charging is paused with the following message:

“Charging was on hold due to iPad temperature“

To Reproduce the Issue, follow the following steps:

• Leave the iPad idle for 1 Hour, sitting unused & not touched.
• Connect the iPad to a Charger and then connect the charger to the AC power outlet/socket. Do NOT just plug the charger into the iPad when the DC power is already available at the USB-C plug.
• Leave the device connected for 10-20 minutes.
• Determine if the iPad has been charged/is charging. This is achieved by checking the Battery Status via the iPad’s Setting App, if the charging is suspended you should see the message.

I have opened a case with Apple & we have worked through the issue to the point where it has now been escalated to “Engineering”. The following major actions have been carried out:

• Replace Charger & USB-C Cables
• Eliminate all external devices
• Erase iPad & Restore from multiple Backup locations (iCloud & Desktop PC)
• Replace iPad & Magic Keyboard (As problem was reported within 30 days of purchase, this was a fairly easy process).
• Erase iPad again & reload apps from the App Store.

When the iPad is connected to a charger after it did not charge, it will charge as expected & probably needed. I believe this is because the iPad is now being used & is active when the USB-C cable is connected to the iPad.

I would be interested in knowing if other people are having the same issue & or can reproduce the issue as described (maybe I need to update the instructions above). I discovered the issue as I normally charge my Apple devices via EVE Living Energy devices, which allows me to schedule the charging of my devices. I know there are relatively easy workarounds but I can also see there are scenarios where people could come across this issue & would be quite annoying for them, if the issue is a OS bug or a hardware/firmware issue.
