I am unable to update my iphone 8 from ios 14.2 to the newest version
whenever I click on software update it won't take me to the next prompt but rather close my settings app and i really need whatsapp

You cannot update an iPhone 8 to the latest version of iOS - only to the latest release of iOS 16. Fortunately for you, that should be enough to run the current version of Whatsapp Messenger. It requires iOS 15.1 or higher.
Since you skipped the updates to iOS 15.*, it is possible that your iPhone might need the help of a Mac or PC to go from iOS 14.2 to the latest release of iOS 16.
