iPhone locked for an hour after failed passcode attempts

I tried my passcode and it didn't work a few times. I then stopped, waited a minute. Tried to swipe up for the passcode and the iphone would not swipe up to enter a passcode. Suddenly stopped and said the phone was locked for 22 minutes. Restarted the phone, now is says the phone is locked for an hour. Is this a known bug? My phone should be up to date on software updates.

But, my watch still works.

Do you know the correct passcode? If you do, you wait it out until you can enter the correct passcode. If you don't know the passcode, you'll have to use a computer to erase the phone.

No, entered the correct passcode 4 times. Stopped and came back to the phone a minute later. The swipe ups to get to the passcode started counting towards failed attempts. It is a complete bug or the phone is junk. It is a ridiculous bug at best.

The restart of the phone solved the problem. I was able to get back in after the hour wait.

If you believe there is a bug relating to swipe ups, you might want to report it here:

FYI, as for escalating delays with repeated invalid passcode entries, see

Passcodes and passwords - Apple Support

"The delays are enforced by the Secure Enclave. If the device is restarted during a timed delay, the delay is still enforced, with the timer starting over for the current period."

If you were 38 minutes into a 1 hour delay, with 22 minutes remaining, that's how restarting the phone would make the delay turn into an hour.

If you enter incorrect passcodes multiple times, iOS will enforce a series of increasing retry delays. This is not a bug, but a security feature. If you attempt to evade the timeout by turning the phone off and back on, my understanding is that the phone is programmed to recognize this and not let you get away with it.

If you enter enough wrong passcodes, the phone will eventually go into a security lockdown from which the only way back in is to reset the phone, wiping all of the data on it.

Just confirming the solution to this issue is to restart your iPhone. Note: My phone is to running 18.5.

This is a nasty bug.
