i have lost access to about 10 keys on my keyboard. Other users of the Mac air are unaffected. I am typing this using the keyboard viewer. I'm guessing i have somehow accidently created a short cut or something but i cannot see a short cut in my area that is not visible another user on the same mac book

You don't say which keys aren't working, but I suspect they are 789uiojkl. That's the numeric keypad that can be activated using Mouse Keys.
