How to block phone calls via area code (July 2025).

If you are wanting to block callers via area code in the native apps, here is how to do it. There is no need to pay for 3rd party apps.

Step 1:

Create a new contact. Name it. eg Blocked by Area Code

Step 2:

Add the area codes you want to block. Here is where it gets a little trickier.

In order for this to work, you need to add country code, area code and an asterix for each number you don't want to specify.

Eg. I am in Australia (country code 61) and want to add the state of NSW (area code 02). A NSW landline number would normally look like 02 1234 5678. So I would add +61 2 **** **** into that contact. For some reason, we remove the 0 from the front of our landline and mobile numbers when we use the country code.

Please note, just adding +61 2 WILL NOT work. 02 **** **** WILL NOT work.

Step 3:

Save your work (You can add as many are codes under this one contact as you want).

Step 4:

Block this contact. This can be done two ways.

1. Go into Settings>Apps>Phone>Blocked Callers>Add Contact - then add the contact you just made.
2. You can call the contact you just made, hang up immediately after hitting call. Go into recents and tap the info button then scroll down to 'block this contact' You will need to follow step one to confirm it was blocked. So easier to to step one in my opinion.

Disclaimer: If you are in a different country, you would need to look at how you would dial the area code as if you were in a different country. Eg country code + area code (which may be different than you are used to).

Remember: Blocking them just sends them to your voicemail/message service. They can still leave you messages. If you don't have a service, they will just get a busy tone or carrier message saying you are not available.
